We recently published a second edition in modern Spanish of Arte de Esgrima by Domingo Luis Godinho (which, together with the edition in modern Portuguese that preceded it, forms a pair of readings on the same work that can be purchased and enjoyed together. The second edition of the work is accompanied by some additional paratext, as the Portuguese version has its own essays, so it is not just an amendment of errata. However, on…
In fulfilling of our mission to support HEMA projects, especially those of an editorial nature, a few months ago AGEA Editora and Acta Periodica Duellatorum signed a collaboration agreement whereby the former facilitates its international sales and distribution infrastructure so that physical copies of the leading academic publication for European martial arts will be available for purchase worldwide. This means, in practical terms, that you can already find Volume 9 / Issue 1 corresponding to…
This article belongs in a series titled «Modern swords of the Ourense Archaeological Museum» which consists on technical files of the said Museum´s weapon collection. These files were documented by Juan Diego Conde Eguileta and Santiago Vilar Labarta who studied, besides their historical context and archaeological value, the fencing characteristics [or properties] of the swords. Due to their variety and singularity of some of the documented pieces, we think these files could be of interest…

Having sent more than 1,300 books to every corner of the world, we would like to thank the postal services which, with remarkable efficiency, take our editions everywhere, at a reasonable cost. With very few exceptions, books reach their destination — either within a few days, or after months of bureaucratic customs procedures, but they arrive at the end. In most shipments the customs procedures are very fast. Some countries even declare books free from…
AGEA Editora is focused on the publication of Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA) books, with special emphasis on Iberian traditions. To this purpose we have created three main collections: Clássica Line: Critical editions of historical treatises in the original language. Glossa Line: Historical sources annotated, commented or translated. Manuais Line: Original content for modern research and practice. We also have a line called «AGEA Editora Documentos», where we hope to publish articles, essays and other…

Building on the precedent stablished with «Cronica duma viagem a Lisboa» on November 2016, we bring here the memory of the last trip to Portugal by AGEA Editora AGEA Editora team members on 10 to 12 of november, 2017. This time our delegation was integrated by Manuel Valle Ortiz, Ton Puey (from Academia da Espada) and Diniz Cabreira (from Arte do Combate). On our way we made a strategic stop at Ponte de Lima to pay hommage to Tereixa…
In spite of postal rates increase we are keeping a better fee for our book postage. To begin with, ordering from the Iberian Peninsula costs just 1 euro. European Union 6€ (sorry brexiteers). Rest of the world 8€. This is for unregistered surface mail, if your postal system is unreliable please contact us before.
Our policy is to use renovable material for sustainable sources and to recycle and to reuse whenever possible. Sometimes we are packing your orders with previously used material, because we not only send books but also we receive a lot of them.
Our comrades Manuel Valle Ortiz and Ton Puey were invited by HEMA-Portugal to give a lecture and a practical lesson at the annual meeting of the Portuguese federation of western martial arts that took place on 4, 5 and 6 November in Lisbon. Taking advantage of the trip, they made several visits to institutions with which AGEA Editora collaborates in the recovery of historical treaties of Portuguese fencing. Here follows a small chronicle of this…
Uses & customs in Iberian fencing salles of the sixteen and seventeenth centuries: safety regulations and equipment; traditions, rituals & salutes; scoring in tournaments; teacher’s wages and teaching methods.
Today, we fix History! We are testing and printing dust jackets for some of our earlier titles, from a time where such a thing hadn’t been invented (if we didn’t do it, it didn’t exist, ok?) and books would thus endure dirt and grime unprotected. But not anymore! Since «Oplosophia» (for which only a few test jackets were produced) we have been issuing our «Classical» books with a transparent dust jacket printed with a motiff…
This brief article describes the history of Verdadeira Destreza in Portugal between the XVI and XVIII centuries. It presents the fencing scene as it probably was at the time, sets context for the apparition of Verdadeira Destreza and its eventual displacement of the older common fencing style and lists and describes the known sources.
Our fellow Ton Puey in his school Academia da Espada, is doing extensive work of theoretical and practical research in the regras (lit. «rules», set chains of actions) for the iberian montante two-handed sword. In this effort, he recorded here a first draft of his interpretation of the 32 rules (16 single and 16 composite) that master Diogo Gomez de Figueiredo left written in his Memorial da Prattica do Montante. Do not miss the opportunity…
This article gathers a series of notes written while studying the sources on the Iberian montante sword of the late XV century and following centuries. The extant sources are listed and analysed. Different approaches to teaching this weapon’s handling are described, stressing those who can provide a context for its use.
We reproduce here an excerpt from the 2009 article «Un texto de Esgrima Española del Siglo XVI» which Manuel Valle Ortiz and Mary Dill Curtis wrote for number 7 of the Materiales para la Historia del Deporte publication, from the Pablo de Olavide University in Sevilla.
